Environmental Leadership & Solid Waste Management Workshop

This free workshop is designed to reduce solid waste pollution in rural communities across southern and eastern Kentucky by enhancing environmental leadership and solid waste management practices. It is designed for local government officials and solid waste professionals, but educators and concerned citizens will benefit, as well.
Note: Attendees will receive bonus points in the scoring process for their PRIDE Environmental Education Grant application(s).
Topics and Speakers
Environmental Leadership: Greg Coker, The Cathedral Institute, will speak on environmental leadership, based on his recent book, Soft Skills Field Manual: The Unwritten Rules for Succeeding in the Workplace.
Recycling: Danny Masten, Pulaski County Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator, will present timely, helpful information about recycling, including Pulaski County's upcoming launch of glass recycling.
Composting: Beth Wilson, Pulaski County Horticulture Extension Agent, will explain why and how to implement composting at home or in larger scale settings, such as schools and businesses.
Opportunities in Waste Management: Danny Anderson, Solid Waste Branch Manager, Kentucky Division of Waste Management, will cover the role of the Solid Waste Branch, the typical municipal solid waste landfill permitting process, and career paths in government and private industry in the waste management area.
Where Can Certification Lead You? Jessica Wilhoite, Certification and Licensing Branch Manager, Kentucky Division of Waste Management, will outline the steps to become a certified solid waste operator and the career paths it can lead to.
PRIDE Environmental Education Grants: PRIDE staff will outline hands-on recycling and composting projects that could be implemented in community and school settings with PRIDE Environmental Education Grants.
Materials
Participants will receive a free copy of Soft Skills Field Manual: The Unwritten Rules for Succeeding in the Workplace, as well as other materials related to the topics presented.
A free lunch will be served.
Continuing Education
For Family Resource Youth Service Workers, 5 training hours have been approved. The code is #2746.
For Mayors and Judge-Executives, approval of CEUs is pending. Please check the Department for Local Government website (https://kydlgweb.ky.gov/Training/16_TrainHome.cfm) and then complete the County Officials Training Incentive Program Participation Form (https://kydlgweb.ky.gov/Documents/Training/Participation_Form_Updated_2014.pdf).
Registration
This workshop is open to everyone, but space is limited. Registrants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Priority will be given to registrants from the 42-county PRIDE service area.
