Join the US 27 Clean Sweep on May 13

Clean Sweep MEME - webDrivers can expect to see volunteers picking up litter along US 27 and other roads in Somerset and Burnside on Wednesday, May 13.

Just over 1,000 volunteers have signed up to participate in the seventh annual PRIDE Clean Sweep of US 27. Almost all of those have joined the cleanup as part of a group, such as businesses and schools.

“We are thrilled with the number of people who have signed up so far, but we have plenty of room for more volunteers,” said Tammie Wilson of PRIDE, which hosts the cleanup in partnership with The Center for Rural Development, Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce, Somerset-Pulaski County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Pulaski County Recycling Center and Waste Connections of Kentucky.

“We have a lot of roads to clean so our community will look its best for Memorial Day and Somernites Cruise visitors,” Wilson said. “If you want to do your part, we would be glad to have you.”

“Starting at 8:00 in the morning, you can register at The Center for Rural Development, which is located at Traffic Light #15.” Wilson explained. “We’ll give you trash bags and gloves. We can direct you to a spot that has not been claimed yet, or you can tell us where you want to clean. It’s important that we know where you will be working so that we can arrange to pick up your filled trash bags.”

The PRIDE Clean Sweep will focus on US 27 through Somerset and Burnside, but volunteers may clean areas nearby. Safe, age-appropriate areas will be available for groups with children.

Volunteers can pick up litter any time they choose between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. At Noon, all volunteers are invited to The Center for Rural Development for a free cook-out and drawing for door prizes.

“We are grateful to the local business and organizations that have donated great door prizes,” Wilson said. “We will be giving away a wide variety of items, including bicycles, overnight hotel stays, movie tickets, restaurant coupons, SomerSplash tickets and tickets to local entertainment attractions.”
