Big Fork Church of God’s youth group cleans up

The Big Fork Church Youth Group accepted the PRIDE Volunteer of the Month Award for keeping their community clean.

The youth group of the Big Fork Church of God, located in Leslie County, earned southern and eastern Kentucky’s PRIDE Volunteer of the Month Award for August 2014.

The group, which has about 30 members, won the award for keeping roadsides clean in the Big Fork community. They conduct a cleanup every spring, and they occasionally do other cleanups during the year. Also, several group members have volunteered to collect water samples from local streams for the county’s new water quality testing program.

“They are a very strong, motivated group of kids,” said Angie Muncy, who is the Leslie County Solid Waste and PRIDE Coordinator. She nominated the youth group for the PRIDE award.

“They call me to schedule their cleanup every spring, and that shows responsibility,” Muncy said. “When I told them that the county needs volunteers to collect water samples, they were more than willing to help. They will be leading men and women in the future.”

“I’m also impressed with their adult leaders,” Muncy added. “They plan activities for the youth and take them on trips. Mike Joseph is their pastor, and Michael Caldwell is their Youth Pastor.”

“We commend these young people for making time to serve their community and take care of the beautiful area they call home,” said PRIDE’s Tammie Wilson. She surprised the group with the award at a meeting in Hazard on Aug. 5.

“Volunteers are so important to making a community the best it can be, and it’s great to see these young folks starting the habit early,” Wilson said. “I want to thank them and their leaders.”

The PRIDE Volunteer of the Month program recognizes hard work and dedication to the PRIDE initiative, which promotes environmental education and cleanup efforts across 42 counties. With corporate sponsorship from TECO Coal, WYMT-TV airs commercials about each PRIDE Volunteer of the Month.
